CCRW is a water quality nonprofit organization and an affiliate of the Waterkeeper Alliance. Our mission is to protect water quality and the quality of life in coastal North Carolina through boots-on-the-ground monitoring, outreach, and advocacy. Serving 129 miles of coastline in the White Oak River Basin, including the New, White Oak, Newport, and North Rivers, CCRW is a project-based organization that addresses water quality concerns based on community input and staff observations.
Responsibilities
Support survey development and outreach for ongoing research on PFAS and heavy metals in aquaculture and wild reef oysters.
- Work collaboratively with CCRW staff to promote a community survey in-person and virtually.
- Create engaging social media and outreach content that supports the project.
- Collaborate with CCRW staff to compile and write a detailed Assessment report based on the survey results.
- Undertake additional responsibilities for the project as directed by CCRW staff.
- Assist with data organization relative to the project.
Intern Responsibilities:
- Survey Development and Distribution: Design and build the survey in Qualtrics, compile mailing addresses, distribute promotional postcards, create social media and digital handouts to promote the survey.
- Community Engagement: Promote the survey at three community events and online and with stakeholders.
- Data Analysis and Reporting: Analyze survey data and compile results into a detailed report.
- Outreach Materials: Develop educational materials to share survey findings with stakeholders and the public.
Qualifications
Currently enrolled in or recently completed a degree in Environmental Science, Sociology, Public Health, Communication, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
- Ability to travel to Carteret and Onslow County, North Carolina for community events – No more than 3 times during the internship.
- Familiarity with survey platforms like Qualtrics.
- Basic proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., SPSS, Excel).
- Experience in graphic design tools such as Canva or Adobe Illustrator.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks effectively.
Recommended Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience in online survey research.
- Knowledge of basic water quality metrics and health.
- Knowledge of the New River, Onslow County area.
- Experience in scientific writing.
Salary/Benefits
Duration: 100 hours, approximately 10 weeks with flexibility (Spring)
Compensation: $16/hour
