Democracy NC

Durham, NC

***About Democracy North Carolina: Democracy North Carolina is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization working to fulfill the promise of “one person, one vote,” the bedrock principle of equal rights and self-determination. We believe that the people deserve and must demand a government that is responsive and committed to the public good. Democracy North Carolina is committed to a range of campaign-finance and voting reforms that encourage more citizen involvement and reduce the impact of big-money on elections and voting. Democracy NC promotes a voluntary public-financing program that frees candidates from the money-chase and puts voters at the center of election financing. In addition, we are committed to expanding voter participation in elections, for example, by reaching those not involved (youth, prisoners and ex-felons, discouraged ex-voters, etc.) and by ensuring that every ballot counts. Our strategy to achieve meaningful reform involves engaging citizens in the process of being active owners of the election system. Our grassroots work aims to develop local and statewide networks of informed citizens who will pursue and defend meaningful pro-democracy policies. Our research/education program analyzes election-related problems and remedies and disseminates our findings to targeted audiences, allied organizations, and the media. Our coalition-building activities flow from our organizing and education programs and focus on developing a coordinated, effective, racially and politically diverse reform effort in NC. ***** About the NC Field Organizer position: Democracy North Carolina organizers are responsible for advocacy and education on a range of campaign and election reform issues in North Carolina, with primary emphasis on two solutions: * the need for “voter-owned” public campaign financing programs, created by the state legislature that allow candidates to agree to limit their spending and fundraising in return for public funding for their campaigns. * the need for other proactive voting rights reforms in North Carolina, such as the extension of “same-day voter registration” from only during early voting to election day; ethics and lobby reforms; ex-felon re-enfranchisement; improved ballot access; electoral college reform; and instant run-off voting. *** The Organizer will work with citizens in Southeastern NC (Fayetteville, Wilmington, Lumberton and surrounding areas) to mobilize and train citizen activists, work with the media, plan events, supervise and canvass with summer organizers, and build coalitions with local organizations. The Organizer can expect extensive travel and irregular hours due to the nature of community organizing. ***Some of the specific aspects of community organizing with this position include: • recruit, train, and coordinate volunteers and new leaders for pro-democracy issues. • develop grassroots voter registration, get-out-the-vote, and other voter activities. • coordinate coalition-building efforts with local chapters of statewide organizations, such as the NAACP, conservation groups, League of Women Voters, religious organizations. • seek speaking opportunities and speak at meetings of local community groups. • work with the media by writing letters to the editor and providing interviews. • coordinate phone/email/newsletter communication networks to build and maintain the pro-democracy movement in Southeastern North Carolina. • organize events, rallies, and activities to further the mission of Democracy North Carolina. • connect electoral reform efforts with broader social justice issues. • stay abreast of current NC politics and the national campaign reform movement. ***Specific aspects of this position go beyond general community organizing work and include: * Democracy Summer Team Leader: Democracy Summer is one of the premiere programs of Democracy North Carolina. Each field organizer in the organization is responsible for hiring, training, supervising, and working with a group of three young organizers from late May through the end of July each year. The travel and variety of hours typically hit a peak during the Democracy Summer program. * Grassroots advocate for North Carolina’s public financing and voting rights reform. Within permissible 501(c)(3) regulations, the organizer will help to implement a public education campaign, coordinate a canvass plan, solicit phone calls to public decision makers, organize visits by constituents, and rally public support for pro-democracy issues. This includes building relations with local civic leaders from both major parties and a wide diversity of concerned citizens.
