Stewardship Associate
• Associate's degree in geography, natural resources, land planning, or other related field. Bachelor degree preferred.
• Excellent computer skills, including demonstrated command of ArcView GIS and applicable extensions.
• 1-2 years of experience in land conservation, natural resource management, or other related field with related GIS work. Generalists with experience in a range of tasks will be preferred, as will those with land trust experience.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; dependable and flexible personality.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to take ownership for projects or tasks, and a commitment to see projects to successful completion.
• An outgoing, friendly personality with excellent analytical and interpersonal skills.
• Demonstrative ability to accurately identify the flora and fauna in the Southern Piedmont, and proven ability to draft and implement natural resource management plans on properties covering flora, wildlife, water resources and timbering.
• High energy team player with a passion for conservation, and a willingness to work with people from diverse backgrounds to accomplish the Conservancy's mission.
• Proven ability to interact effectively with volunteers and gain the respect of team mates.

Catawba Lands Conservancy is a nonprofit regional land trust that protects the land, water, and wildlife resources of the Southern Piedmont and Lower Catawba River Basin to sustain our region’s health, natural beauty, and ecological diversity now and in the future. Stewardship of the Conservancy’s protected lands is a critical function, and includes monitoring, enforcement of conservation easement requirements, and proper management of the Conservancy’s properties. Critical to the function is the effective use of technology, including GIS analysis and mapping for both internal team mates and community partners. This position provides direct support to the Stewardship Director and works closely with the Technology Director, the Land Protection team, and volunteers covering a wide variety of tasks and duties associated with stewardship of the Conservancy’s lands. ***** Duties and Responsibilities: ***** A. General Land Protection and Stewardship Programs (approximately 75%) • Baseline reports: responsible for preparing the reports that include maps and statistics such as USGS maps, soil surveys, slope calculations, and GPS data collection, flora and fauna identification, and location mapping. *** Stewardship Associate Regional Land Trust Charlotte, NC • Survey help: responsible for assisting with communication to land surveyors, including bid requests, managing project work, tracking deadlines, ensuring data compatibility, and groundtruthing surveys. • Land stewardship activities: o Conservation easement and fee owned land monitoring site visits and reporting: responsible for GPS data collection and integration with GIS, flora and fauna identification, field note recordation, boundary marking and maintenance, review of reserved rights and prohibited uses specific to the conservation easement, and landowner relationships. • Land management activities: o Planning and coordination of volunteer workdays, invasive species removal and eradication, boundary maintenance, oversight for contractors and third parties, and research activities on Conservancy owned property. Assist in the preparation and implementation of long-term stewardship management plans for Conservancy-owned properties. • Support the production of scientific research projects on Conservancy owned property, including maintenance and expansion of the current salamander population monitoring program. ****** B. GIS Analysis and Mapping (approximately 15%) • Mapping: responsible for meeting the mapping needs of the Land Protection and Stewardship Programs, as well as the Outreach and Education and Development functions as requested. • Data acquisition, updates, management, and storage: responsible for acquiring GIS data, ensuring that the data is as up-to-date as possible, and keeping the data well-organized. • Land conservation planning: as requested gather and manipulate data to create maps and conservation plans on properties under consideration for acquisition by Catawba Lands Conservancy, including GPS data collection, mapping of proposed new boundary lines, and calculation of necessary geographical statistics. • Large-scale conservation planning assistance: responsible for collecting and mapping GIS data necessary for riparian corridor or county-wide land protection planning initiatives. • Work closely with the Technology Director on the general support of GIS mapping services for internal and external clients as requested. ***** C. Additional responsibilities (approximately 10%) • Assist with occasional computer hardware and software needs as necessary. • Perform other duties as deemed appropriate by Stewardship Director in support of the Conservancy team.
