Appalachian Voices

Boone, NC

Landowner Outreach Associate Position Description: Appalachian Voices seeks a motivated individual to play a central role in our effort to improve private forest stewardship in the southern mountains. Appalachian Voices is working to educate thousands of landowners about the importance and value of sustainable forestry via the creation and distribution of a sustainable forestry handbook. The handbook is designed to tackle one of the most important conservation challenges facing the Southeast—improving the management of private forests, which make up the vast majority of forestland in the region. The first edition, written by our staff forester and released in 2004, has enjoyed tremendous demand with more than 500 landowners requesting the handbook, representing a combined ownership of more than 25,000 acres. The second edition was released in December 2006 and we are currently distributing 5,000 copies across the region. The 2008-2009 AmeriCorps member will be responsible for connecting all these landowners by developing a new online forum. This forum will be a clearinghouse for regional sustainable forestry information. The centerpiece of the site will be an interactive version of the handbook where landowners can search for topics of interest and connect directly with thousands of resources across the region. In addition, the forum will include a section where landowners can rate loggers and other forestry professionals and share their positive and negative experiences. It will also include a calendar of sustainable forestry events, news clippings, and much more. In fulfilling their duties, the member will develop excellent skills in public education, website development, and outreach to landowners by working closely with the Appalachian Voices staff to develop and implement our landowner forum on the Appalachian Voices website to connect landowners with each other and resources; give public presentations to audiences across the region to promote the handbook and the landowner forum; write articles about the handbook and the landowner forum for appropriate publications, newsletters, and websites; and participate in AmeriCorps Project Conserve sponsored events, service days, and training days. AmeriCorps Description: Administered by the Carolina Mountain Land Conservancy, AmeriCorps Project Conserve is a conservation-oriented AmeriCorps program located in communities across western North Carolina. North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains are among our nation’s most significant natural treasures. Unfortunately, population and growth trends pose a significant threat to the region’s outstanding natural resources. AmeriCorps Project Conserve is therefore striving to accelerate the pace of conservation in these mountains while we still have the opportunity. AmeriCorps Project Conserve, supported by federal, state and local funding partners, is focused on conservation, education, and volunteerism. Each full-time member devotes 1700 hours of service (part-times members devote 900 hours) over an 11-month term of service at one of 13 partnering sites. AmeriCorps Project Conserve partners include land conservancies, county and state agencies, and other local non-profits focusing on environmental conservation. Members’ specific duties vary greatly based on the service site.
