Southern Environmental Law Center
Washington, D.C.
The Southern Environmental Law Center is seeking a Legislative Associate for its recently established Washington, DC office. SELC has been defending the health and environment of the Southeast for more than 20 years, and this is a rare opportunity to help bring our expertise and the environmental issues of the southeastern United States to Capitol Hill. ***** About SELC: With offices across the region (core offices in Atlanta, GA; Chapel Hill, NC; and Charlottesville, VA; and satellite offices in Asheville, NC; Charleston, SC; Washington, DC; and Richmond, VA), SELC is the only organization using law and policy expertise exclusively to protect the South’s natural resources—its land, air, water, coast and wetlands—and to preserve our rural countryside and community character. Our approach is unique—and successful. We work in Congress and state legislatures to inform environmental law; in regulatory agencies to implement environmental laws and policies; and in the courts to stop the worst abuses of southern resources and set precedents to ensure their lasting protection. SELC works collaboratively with over 100 national, state, and local groups to enhance their efficacy and achieve our common conservation goals. Our legal and policy staff comprises some of the nation’s leading experts in their respective fields, and SELC is recognized as one of the most effective environmental organizations in the country. We currently have a staff of 71, including 33 attorneys. Additional information regarding our work and staff is available at www.southernenvironment.org. ***** About the position: The Legislative Associate will work in close partnership with the DC Legislative Director to advance SELC’s policy objectives in Congress. This position is an opportunity to work on legislative issues critical to the Southeast and actively participate in advocacy on the Hill. It also involves administrative responsibilities to ensure the smooth operation of SELC’s DC office.
